Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m.

Please join us for a free IWU Guest Artist/Faculty Recital at Illinois Wesleyan University's Presser Hall, Westbrook Auditorium featuring Michael Isaac Strauss, viola; R. Kent Cook, piano.

This program surveys three of the greatest works written for the viola, all written in 1919. Each created in the shadow of WWI, these deeply expressive works celebrate a Neo-Romantic musical language. Two pieces were inspired by a competition championed by renowned arts patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge.

Ernest Bloch earned first prize for his exotic and spiritual Suite for viola and piano. Second prize went to the unknown Rebecca Clarke for her sensuous and revolutionary Sonata for viola and piano. The third offering is Paul Hindemith’s “Brahmsian” effort—the Sonata in F, Op. 11, No. 4—written shortly after the composer served at the Western Front.

  • All faculty, guest and student concerts will be held in the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Music’s Westbrook Auditorium, 1312 Park St, Bloomington, IL, unless otherwise noted.

  • All concerts are free and open to the public.
